The third installment of a series of future focused military situated novels presents a world where global warming has had the effect of making the equatorial band around the earth increasingly uninhabitable. As a result, Brazil, Indonesia and Nigeria have built up a naval capability to fight a war with what is left of the United States and China, to press claims for reparations. This echoes discussions of today from several island nations who see their homes disappearing under the ocean waves resulting from rising seas.
The authors retain the framework of their earlier works, bringing the action to the reader through the eyes of the children of those who fought that first war, fifty years previously. While unlikely alliances form and shift during the course of the story, the real issue is that no nation really has the ability to impose their will alone, and even coalitions pay a very heavy price to conduct the military operations described. Technology derived from the singularity efforts of thirty years before is employed to create mismatches. These enable the Reparationists to launch a flotilla to colonize parts of the eastern seaboard in Canada and the US. The coalition of China and the remains of the US seek to repel them.
The singularity plays a major role in introducing, what today would seem an unlikely force multiplier to enable one coalition to successfully carry out their mission. As such, the authors once again entertainingly challenge our understanding of how the world will change, not in a linear extrapolation of today, but in a very unpredictable fashion, with their story but one that could occur.
