Emergence by dhtreichler

Emergence Book CoverThe final installment in the Immortals series exploring what it means to be human focuses on the possible societal response to immortals amongst us. In today’s society, those with the technology and access to capital, seek to separate themselves from everyone else. And at the same time give themselves privileges not available to the rest of society. Money will do that. Power will do that. And someone who can position to separate from even the other immortals will be the closest thing man has seen to a god on earth. The ability to choose. Who will live forever. Who will die.

When power and money are separated from what makes us human, the results can be catastrophic. But when the time horizon for the evil that follows is forever, the stakes rise not geometrically but infinitely.

The question of who can change the trajectory of events when one person has garnered the ability to dictate the future is the focus on this installment in the story. How does society cope with increasing inequality that has taken on different dimensions than ever experienced in history? How does one person stand up when all about her seem unable to respond owing their very existence to one person? And when one person does stand up, how does she garner the support and strength needed to actually make a difference?
